Cervicogenic vertigo In Shawano WI
Hello everyone it's Dr. Aeric and I wanted to take some time to talk about a condition that we as chiropractors see often while treating patients in Shawano WI. That is cervicogenic vertigo, a fancy name to describe a feeling of dizziness with the root cause lying in the neck.
What is Cervicogenic vertigo In Shawano WI?
Vertigo can be a very troubling and worrisome condition especially when you start to google what all can cause the dizziness you are experiencing. Before we get too far in I do want to stress that there are more serious causes of vertigo that need to be addressed by the hospital. If you experience head trauma, loss of consciousness, blurred vision, face numbness, or difficulty speaking along with the dizziness then you need to go to your nearest urgent care to be evaluated.
Now that we have covered that let's talk about the dizziness that is still there despite the lack of those other symptoms. Cervicogenic vertigo is a side effect of underlying issues in the neck. The proprioception, which is your body's ability to know where its parts are located in space, is affected when conditions such as degeneration, inflammation, disc injury, or even tight muscles are present. To relieve the vertigo those underlying conditions need to be addressed.
The sensation of cervicogenic vertigo is often described as a feeling of "floating, unsteadiness, or general imbalance". If you feel like you or the room is "spinning" then that is most likely a different type of vertigo that involves the inner ear which might be a topic for a future video like this.
Some other symptoms that can be present with this condition are a headache (usually in the back area of the head or behind the eyes), occasional numbness down the arms, and the dizziness is usually episodic and is relieved when the neck is at rest.
How can we help with this?
Well the reason I bring this condition up is because a chiropractic adjustment has been shown to be one of if not the most effective treatment for this condition. Besides the adjustment, massage of the cervical muscles, ultrasound therapy and muscle stimulation are shown to be effective in combination with the adjustment. Come on in and we can have a consultation and examination to determine if our treatments are the right fit for you.
